Update on visas for HGV drivers - 30/09/2021

As announced at the weekend, 5,500 poultry workers and 5,000 HGV drivers transporting food and fuel will be able to enter the UK for work in the lead up to Christmas 2021.

Logistics UK is working hard to ensure this scheme gets up and running. The information below is the detail we have received from the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) this afternoon, we will send members further updates as soon as we have them.

  • More information about the announcement can be found in the latest press release here.
  • The additional visas will be delivered through the temporary worker route, and Defra expects the scheme will begin recruitment in October.
  • UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI), working with the Department for Transport and Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, will process applications, once made, in a timely manner.
  • Defra is working with both sectors to build recruitment pipelines to facilitate the swift movement of qualified seasonal workers into the UK.
  • Defra is currently confirming the final details of this scheme and will communicate them as soon as they become available.
