Starting a new temporary role? 10 tips

Working for an Employment Agency can be a mutually beneficial way to offer a flexible recruitment solution for both the candidate and end user.

Here’s how to get it right.

  1. Be patient. The hiring process can be fast paced. Full training will be given at the start of each assignment. Your agency will contact you at the end of your first day to make sure you are happy. If you have any questions or concerns, you should direct these direct to your Agency who will support you, as soon as they arise.
  2. Document your accomplishments. You won’t get a performance review but save any positive feedback you receive and make notes on your successes just in case you do end up in the running for a permanent role.
  3. Don’t try to be the person you’re replacing. Just be the person who’s doing that job to the best of your ability.
  4. Arrive early. Your punctuality, or lack of, will be noticed, and being a few minutes early will make a great impression.
  5. Ask for feedback. Schedule a time at the end of your temp assignment to get constructive feedback from your manager. Ask if there’ll be opportunities to work there again, ask for job or temp work referrals, and most importantly, ask your manager and colleagues for references.
  6. Take notes when people are explaining the ropes to you. To really impress people, carry a notebook and pen.
  7. Follow the 80/20 rule. Listen 80% of the time and talk 20%. Your employer and colleagues will be impressed by your willingness to learn.
  8. Ask questions. It’s always better to ask if you’re not sure.
  9. Be honest. Admit any mistakes you make and be willing to correct them. Nobody is expecting you to be perfect.
  10. Be Engaged. Position yourself as an integral, indispensable part of the team by working hard, being reliable and always asking your manager at the end of the day if they need anything else done before you go home.

Temporary assignments vary in length and duration, this will all be explained to you by your Agency before you start.
